Finding harmony
“The Coalition’s Family Support Services program was the only lifeline we had in order to survive.”
Jamie and Leona were optimistic and idealistic newlyweds. Both were employed, but Jamie’s mental health disability began disrupting his career as a professional musician. Soon he had no gigs and Leona was the sole provider. She lost her job when their first child was born. Suddenly they were on the streets without medical or mental health care.
The Family Support Services program was Jamie and Leona’s first experience with the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless. It became their lifeline to motel vouchers and ultimately the gateway to housing and other services including medical care and mental health care.
Jamie’s disability prevents him from working, but Leona anticipates the time when the kids are old enough so that she can return to work. In the meantime she is a volunteer counselor for other families needing help. Jamie plans to be involved with the music program at the kids’ school where he will help with musical productions, arrangements, and performances.
