Colorado Homeless Service Provider Granted $50,000 to Enact Affordable
Housing Policies for Lowest Income Earners
DENVER, CO—Colorado Coalition for the Homeless (CCH) is pleased to be one of eight national grantees for the Opportunity Starts at Home multisector affordable homes campaign. As a grantee, CCH will use the $50,000 in funding to diversify Colorado's housing coalition to other sectors, such as health, education, civil rights, food security, climate, faith, anti-poverty, and more. While CCH understands and practices the housing/health connection, the Opportunity Starts at Home campaign will help to further this connection through the intersection of education, social justice, food security, transportation, and beyond.
Additionally, multi-sector partnerships will be leveraged to engage federal elected officials who represent the state to enact policies which correct longstanding racial inequities and expand affordable housing for the nation’s lowest income people. In early summer, CCH is proud to host a Colorado College Public Interest Fellow to help coordinate and facilitate with partners to advance this important public policy work.
Colorado has 165,567 extremely low income renter households with only 50,627 affordable units for those households, based on data from the National Low Income Housing Coalition. "The affordable housing shortage in Colorado cannot be ignored. The Opportunity Starts at Home campaign will help to solve issues around equitable and accessible housing for all Coloradans, creating a more just housing system locally and encouraging action nationally," said Cathy Alderman, Chief Communications and Public Policy Officer.
