Colorado Coalition for the Homeless Receives Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian AwardHonoring humanitarian leaders who live and lead in the example of peace and equality exemplified by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
DENVER, January 17, 2017 — The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless (Coalition) was honored to be the recipient of a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award last Tuesday, January 10. For the last 26 years, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert and Humanitarian Awards, hosted by the Colorado Symphony in collaboration with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission, has recognized humanitarian leaders who live and lead in the example of peace and equality exemplified by the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and in his words, “If I can help someone, then my living shall not be in vain.” Nominees are individuals or organizations that have given freely from their hearts to others, who have given their talent, time and energy to meet unmet needs, stir hope, speak for the voiceless, and to build a better world even for just one person at a time. This year’s recipients included: Michelyn Johnson, Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, and Rise Colorado (Humanitarian Award); Noah Jones (Outstanding Youth Award); Charles McCulley, Owetta McNeal, and Dr. Ruth Steele (Lifetime Achievement Award); and Larry Borom, Raphael Corky Gonzalez, and Bishop Phillip Porter (Wilma J. Webb Founder’s Award). “We believe all people have the right to adequate housing and healthcare. By removing barriers to these rights, we are able to help individuals and families live healthier, happier lives, while also building stronger, caring communities,” said John Parvensky, President and CEO of the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless. “We are truly honored to receive this award and to be among these caring and community-minded award recipients.” About the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission The purpose of the Statewide Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission is to unify and educate communities within the State of Colorado and encourage appropriate observations, ceremonies and activities in commemoration of the federal holiday and state legal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. throughout all the towns, cities, school districts, counties and local governments within Colorado.
